Review for Smart Guard Elite Dental Guard

 SmartGuard Elite Dental Guard

I have been trying to review over the counter “Night Guards” or “Dental Guards” for years, and I’ve never been able to post any review in my blog. Why? Because all of the “do it yourself” night guards that I tested before, have been a huge disappointment until now. I really wanted my first review to be at the very least, a semi-positive one.

However, I did find one over the counter (OTC) store bought night guard appliance that was better than most of the other OTC night guards, as far as fitting, functionality and comfort. It is called the “SmartGuard Elite Dental Guard.” Now don’t get me wrong, a professionally custom made one by a dentist is always going to be better, but anything short of that….it is worth trying. And the price was only about $35, so there was really no downside to at least trying it.

Do it Yourself Fitting

Inside the box comes two night guards that have not been molded yet. There are simple molding instructions, which essentially is just putting the prefab appliance in hot water for about 60 seconds until it gets soft enough to be able to do an at home custom fit. Just follow the directions on how to shape the night guard to your teeth. I’m glad they included two night guards in the box, because inevitably you will want a second chance to perfect your molding talents. I would suggest maybe waiting at least a few nights before doing the second one, so you can think about how to make your second night guard even better.

Comfort

The biggest problem with the plethora of night guards that I tested, were that they were uncomfortable. They either had a rubbery fake feel or were chunky and awkward in my mouth. However, with the SmartGuard Elite Dental Guard it was very comfortable. My only criticism would be that I wished it was a bit more slippery so the side to side glide of my jaw would feel more effortless and natural. But all in all, this was the best OTC appliance out there.

Does it Help?

Let’s just say, it does the job.  This appliance will definitely stop the Clenching and Grinding.  It uses a “Front Tooth Design” meaning it just covers the 6 upper front teeth.  This will prevent the back teeth from touching.

Inside the SmartGuard Elite Dental Guard kit came a 7 to 10 day supply of “SmartGuard Premium Cleaner” which did an unexpectedly exceptional job at cleaning and freshening my SmartGuard Elite Night Guard. In fact it was so good, that I am going to use the cleaning solution for my custom made acrylic night guard that my dentist made for me. Anybody who has worn night guards, or dentures knows how nasty they can become, if not cleaned regularly. It comes in a “Mint Fresh” flavor.

Bottom Line

This was the best OTC Night Guard appliance I could find after several years of testing and trying different ones….but I’m not going to lie….there just is no replacement for a custom made one at your dentist’s office.  But the price was right, and may tide you over for a few months until COVID goes away and you can get to the dentist.  And last but not least…..I am POSITIVE that you will like the SmartGuard Cleaner.  I really was not expecting that, but am happy to have it. It worked better than Efferdent, Polident or any of those other tablets designed to clean night guards.
